Brisbane Football Club Training Facility

Brisbane Football Club Training Facility

The Brisbane Lions Training and Administration Facility design competition response sought to create a destination at the heart of a young community - a home for the women and men’s teams and a community focused sporting facility. It was designed to be welcoming, familiar and create a sense of belonging.

At the heart of the complex was the training areas including the High Performance and Strength Conditioning areas, with associated rehabilitation, physio, medical strapping and support, change rooms, hydro therapy, and ancillary spaces. This combined area demonstrated state of the art facilities that are a prerequisite to support performance based professional sport.

Qualities of the Brunswick Street Oval informed the design to create a venue immersed in the history of the club. These qualities combined with the club’s recent history were celebrated with a sub-tropical design approach, creating a familiar yet distinctive Queensland identity.

The Springfield train station, proposed new multi-deck carpark, and existing shopping centre attract the core functional and commercial areas to the south where they interweave with the club and community. Additional commercial opportunities with a health & wellness focus are located to the north.

Two overlapping roofs define the grandstand and programmed space providing an inner oval focus and outward focus to a community plaza. The plaza was an activated front door enlivened by ground floor retail opportunities and child care. The roofs overlap above the Lion’s Deck, a large elevated sub-tropical outdoor room at the intersection of the club, the ground, the community, and commercial offerings. It is a memorable social space/venue at the heart of the club. Below the deck a naturally ventilated terrace acts as the main entry to the facilities.
