The TSSC building, an addition to Waipapa Taumata Rau The University of Auckland’s Epsom Campus, provides permanent accommodation for the Teacher Support Services – an educational service providing ongoing curriculum support and advice for schools and teachers.

The building is divided along a north-south axis; to the west the advisors’ spaces and to the east, administration. These two elements are brought together around a top-lit atrium terminated by the shared lobby space.

The advisors’ spaces are arranged in bays spread over two levels.  These bays rotate around the atrium following the curvature of an adjacent avenue of Pohutukawa trees

Each bay is naturally ventilated with various elements providing additional environmental control, including external sun shading louvres and internal light shelves to bounce natural light back into each space.

There is a direct response to the fundamental structure of the organisation, which allows the development of this somewhat hybrid workspace – not open-plan, not cellular, but grouped.

The circulation zone links the spaces and functions of the project together, encouraging and supporting social interaction in the workplace.
