The framework planning exercise highlighted and addressed the key issues facing The University of Auckland Waipapa Taumata Rau’s Sector 200.

Vital design strategies and principles were developed to ensure that the objectives of the University of Auckland’s strategic plan can be realised in a manner that increases the amenity and quality of the open spaces and built form.

Key issues included the following:

  • the existing development controls within the District Plan including heritage, transit, height and building coverage
  • existing buildings such as the Marae and Fale Pacifica Complex and their importance within the University and the broader community
  • the strong presence of the new business school (OGGB) and the potential of Wynyard Street to form part of the University landscape
  • challenging topography creating problematic connectivity within the sector/ campus
  • a lack of campus strategy for built form and open spaces

The framework plan consists of seven projects; three landscape/infrastructural projects and four built projects.

The landscape projects include the re-configuration of the existing under-utilised Wynyard Street as a landscape creating a series of social spaces while the four built projects addressed issues such as connectivity between and within existing buildings, opportunities for refurbishment and additions and the potential for development in close proximity to a number of buildings with significant heritage and cultural value.
