Auckland Waterfront Transformed
8 August 2011
The first phase of the Wynyard Quarter redevelopment in Auckland was formally opened on Saturday 6 August with a pōwhiri held in Karanga Plaza. At sunrise waka landed at the base of the tidal stairs. Dignitaries, including the Prime Minister and other politicians, joined the Mayor and Waterfront Auckland in this celebration.
The new open spaces, streets and buildings of the Precinct establish the east-west axis, an extension of Quay Street creating a new waterfront promenade between Silo Park and Queen Street as envisaged by the Wynyard Quarter Urban Design Framework. Waterfront Auckland CEO Bob Harvey complimented the quality of the planning process for the Wynyard Quarter.
Since 2004, Architectus have had an on-going role in developing the Wynyard Quarter Master Plan, Urban Design Framework, Precinct Plan, and Waterfront Tram Circuit; as well as the design of Karanga Plaza and Halsey Wharf, for Ports of Auckland, Sea+City Projects and Waterfront Auckland.
