The new gymnasium and classroom at St Peter's College in Auckland was opened on Tuesday 21 September by the Governor General of New Zealand, His Excellency the Right Honourable Sir Anand Satyanand, GNZM, QSO.
Following a stirring haka by the massed 1200 pupils, the building was blessed by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland the Very Reverend Bishop Patrick Dunn D.D. The Bishop also blessed and named the Brother John Prendergast Foyer in honour of the former old boy, teacher and Headmaster of St Peter's.
The third project to be completed by Architectus Auckland at the school following the award-winning Technology Block and Middle School buildings, the gym presents a public face of the school to the adjacent, busy arterial route of Khyber Pass.
Instead of naming the building, which is the general tradition of the school, the Gymnasium simply carries the motto of St Peter's College: "to love and to serve".
