Garden Island Public Access

Developed as part of the Federal Government's plan to return Sydney Harbour foreshore defence sites to the people of Australia, this project was the result of a master plan study to facilitate and encourage public access to the eastern tip of Garden Island.

Working with project managers, heritage, landscape and transport consultants, Architectus urban designers and architects prepared a detailed master plan that included principles for the restoration and adaptive re-use of more than
20 buildings.

The works included a function centre, public toilets, viewing platform, maintenance to the ferry wharf, the boat shed and the tennis pavilion as well as a path network, access stairs and a new lift.

Provision was made in the master plan for a Naval Museum to be incorporated. A viewing platform on top of the signal house makes reference to the original 19th century signalling platform. This significant foreshore location is now accessible to the general public and offers further opportunities to capitalise on the historic value of the site.
