Architectus carried out a masterplan and a $3.4 million redevelopment of South Oakleigh Secondary College in 1997 that included new science rooms, student facilities, administration offices, food technology and a new Performing Arts Centre to seat over 300 people.
The Performing Arts Centre was developed by removing part of the existing concrete slab and inserting a stepped raked floor connecting the ground and first floor levels. Providing seating for over 300 people, the new centre offers great flexibility for the delivery of the curriculum at the College. Specialist lighting and audio provision was included in the contract.
Theatre design is a demanding aspect of architecture and careful consideration was given to the selection of the seating, sight lines, acoustics, mechanical and other specialist services.
At South Oakleigh Secondary College Architectus was able to design a cost effective theatre, for approximately $800,000, that satisfied the College's requirements.
